Records for the war dead

The Italian War History Museum of Rovereto is working on a census and data collection drive about people from Trentino who died in the First World War. The project aims to fulfil the duty of commemoration and to address an issue left open for too long.

More than 55,000 soldiers from Trentino fought in Galicia, Serbia and on the Italian front between 1914 and 1918. More than 11,000 died in trenches, hospitals and prison camps. Their bodies were buried in cemeteries where very few families could go. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in whose army most of them had fought, and the unification of Trentino to the Kingdom of Italy hindered the accurate and proper census of the losses. In the post-war period, communities were able to preserve their memory with monuments to the dead and tombstones in cemeteries, churches and squares.

For each soldier, a card has been drawn up, listing the surname, name, nickname, place and date of birth and death, place of burial, marital status, children, place of residence, profession, parents’ names, army unit and rank and any recognition received. The causes and circumstances of death, where known, are described in brief summaries. Texts and images are also recorded, where available.
The sources used are specified, along with a reference bibliography. Some information is marked as needing verification. The database is updated every six months.

Information and research are available from the Trentinocultura portal by opeing the Patrimonio on-line menu (On-line Heritage) under the heading Caduti Trentini della I guerra mondiale (First World War Dead from Trentino).
